iPad apps in Education

After completing an iPad trial with a year 10 Science class I came to the conclusion that while there are a number of reasonable subject specific apps (particularly for the primary school years), the greatest benefit of the iPad is in the management and organisation of educational life as a teacher or a student. The simple ability to have all of your textbooks on one device is just the beginning. There are many amazing apps such as Goodreader, Evernote, Audio Note, Noterize, Dropbox,…

The Role of Technology and eTextbooks in the College Learning Experience

The use of technology in our personal lives has increased at an exponential rate over the last few years, be it in the way we listen to our music, get our news or read our favorite bestseller. With technology influencing our lives in so many ways, we’ve come to expect it to integrate into almost everything we do.  It’s no surprise then that technology is continuing to cement its place in the classroom, transforming the way students learn and digest information.…

Making the device your own

Our school has recently made the leap to provide not only iPads as an available technology to classes, like the laptop carts and desktops in labs, we have also committed to giving out iPads to students as they arrive in the 9th grade year.....

As I am digging for content and apps that fully utilize the adoption of the new technology, I can't help but think of the 'geeks' that will blaze new trails in the use of the device.  Why the geeks?  Geeks are celebrated for not only learning…

Easy iOS Update...Sung to the Tune of "All I Want for Christmas"!

Our school is in its first trimester of a 1:1 iPad initiative and is feeling a bit queesy about updating our 135 iPads to the new iOS 5 operating system.  We just recovered from the interesting task of unboxing, tagging, registering, loading apps and updating.  When the thought of now installing iOS 5 crosses our minds, I admit I become a bit anxious.  I need help!

Who out there has tackled the update for a large number of iPads?  When I attempted to update 5 at a time via…

iPads For Preschoolers

In a world that revolves around technology, you would think that this would also be the case within our classrooms. However, my preschool students do not have access to technology in the classroom and they would benefit from using an iPad to facilitate the learning process especially when teaching students with special needs and English language learners.

My students are three to five years old and attend their neighborhood public school in a high poverty area of the city. The…

My Pre-Ipad Evaluation

One of our school division goals is to make laptops/netbooks/computers accessible to grade 9-12 students on a 1-1 basis.

At our annual planning day, our staff felt that we needed to focus on the K-8 area as well, because technology is typically not as available to them. We considered both ipads and netbooks.

After speaking to our technology resource director, he suggested that we consider piloting a pod of ipads/netbooks in the classroom. As a result, I spent a fair… Continue

Welcome to iPads in Education

I'm the Director of Educational Technology at a high school in Los Angeles. After finally receiving and reviewing the iPad we've decided to pilot the use of iPads in our school next year. Given the differences between iPads and laptops, I thought it might be helpful to share our experiences - both good and bad - and hopefully to hear from others that are also using iPads in schools and classrooms.… Continue
