Supplementing Textbooks with Student Constructed Knowledge Bases

We’re just a few weeks removed from a major Apple announcement regarding the release of a new eTextbooks initiative. I’m keenly aware of the significance of the move to eBooks, especially as I have a 13 year old that carries 20 pounds in his backpack to school every day. Yale Open Courses and my iPad

I have been an iPad user for the past year now and I have been looking for a way to make it more than just a toy.  My kids watch their cartoons on it, my husband watches YouTube videos on it and I mostly surf and check my emails, but I really couldn’t justify spending $600+ on this “toy”.

What's cooking in the classroom

I teach and support tech and media making in an independent middle school in Lexington, KY. Our high school began a laptop program in 2003. Last year after Christmas we initiated an iPad test in the middle school, which has evolved into a BYOD situation now. Nothing to read into situation. Roughly a third of the middle school students now bring iPads or apple laptops to school. Teachers unanimously support what's happening. Nobody ready to use the phone yet.
