Jeremy Dorn commented on Sam Gliksman's blog post Evaluating Apple's Foray into the Textbook Market
"The EULA is an inner sting issue and one that should help highlight how much we as a society (and congress) should look at what is allowed in these things. Personally I do hope Apple gets roasted from this as its about as boneheaded as you could…"

Jeremy Dorn commented on Marcus Twyford's blog post Making the device your own
"I agree with you. Ever since the first iPad was announced I was grumbling that it wouldn't truly work well in schools. You can likely go back and find my occasional posts out right demanding Apple start putting Admin control for iOS into their…"

"You'd only need Apple IDs if you want to use iCloud for file backup/transfer/storage.   Tested both AirPlay and AirServer (the Mac/PC side of the app), no go on mirroring. Got an email from AirServer support when I asked about adding…"

"I remember one of the TUAW weblogers wrote a small untility that would pick-up on AirPlay signals as well. There was another 3rd party paid program that is out there as well. A distant thought would be to try and run multiple instances of these…"

Jeremy Dorn replied to Eric Mahan's discussion Looking to mass sync over 40 iPads
"Oof. I really need to get a hold of an Apple rep for a few hours and yack his or her ear off. Is there a possibility of doing some remote fiddling with management profiles? Push a Profile modification at night that allows App installs, then Push the…"

Jeremy Dorn replied to Eric Mahan's discussion Looking to mass sync over 40 iPads
"In a quick look I found Datamation Systems take on iPad Carts. They seem to offer a 40 unit version. There is also a 49-unit hub thing you could use to help build your own custom cart.   I really hope iOS 5 and it's wireless sync…"

Jeremy Dorn replied to ldenson8's discussion Numbering iPads
"The iPad wallpaper works much the same as the iPod Touch. One way would be to load a custom background image with the iPad's name/number as part of the image. This background could at base be the school logo/mascot. I would also suggest having…"

Jeremy Dorn replied to Sam Gliksman's discussion School's Controversial Decision to Make iPads 'compulsory'. Do You Agree?
"A compulsory portable computer for students in the equivalent of US 7th or 8th grade? Unfortunately the letter has either been pulled or not accessible to IPs in the US. Based on the news article it sounds more like any portable computing device…"

Jeremy Dorn replied to Sam Gliksman's discussion Protect Your iPad Data With a Passcode
"General rule in data security is if "they" have physical possession of your device the battle is over. That said a strong (not simple) passcode will help dissuade casual access to your lost device. Also be sure to install Find My iPhone.…"

I am the lab assistant(read tech support first responder) at a 1:1 computing elementary school. I have become interested in Alan Kay's idea of the dynabook and how to get the iPad there.

I have a life-times experience working with Apple products. One could easily say I grew up on them.

iBooks Author and Apples ecosystem of interactive content

Posted on January 24, 2012 at 10:17am 0 Comments

As a follow up to my last blog I though I would share some of the options that are out there to get even the moderately techno-phobish to consider how easy it is to create the kind of supplemental content iBooks2 can support. Not for publication on iTunes mind, but for creating classroom materials.

Apple already provides the tools for users to create decent quality audio (GarageBand) and video (iMovie) which can be added to an iBook. You can even use Quick Time to create… Continue

iBooks Author and the new student report

Posted on January 24, 2012 at 9:00am 0 Comments

I have been poking at iBooks Author since its launch day and have been comparing it to other digital tools I see in use around my school site. It wasn't until my memory was twigged to a grade level team meeting I was asked to attend for trouble shooting that I put a few thing together.

Many of our teachers on staff (especially from 3rd up) have had students do combination writen, typed, presented, and pod-casted reports. The process generally works at our site as follows. You may… Continue

Pages, Keynote, Numbers.

Now iPhones and iPods can get full access to iWork '09 and iWork iOS create files. Personally I'm happy that Numbers is making its way over. Keynote is also something I'm sure people have long wanted to have on an iPhone for presentation uses, plug in the Phone to the projection system and have your iPad for walking…

Anticipating Lion, Multiple iPads using 1 PC

Posted on April 21, 2011 at 3:30pm 0 Comments

With Mac OSX Lion in the works there are many features being thrown around. One that caught my attention right away was Apple finally wising up to the need for a 1st party solution for multiple remote users. This is the same function you can get from a Windows sever and network accounts, the ability for a single machine to host several users at once from remote terminals. All programs run on the server and users just view the screen.

The iPad has already been demonstrated as viable… Continue
