I just blogged about it! Here's the post:

I wish I could share one of the "books," but unfortunately they contain student photos and names.
I found a few great ones for elementary school use (and the photos enthusiasts among us):

Strip Designer
PhotoCard
ScrapPad...on sale for 99 cents for a few more days!
You can also check out Alzebra which is a math app. Browse through http://punflay.com for educational iPhone/iPad apps
Math: Sumstacker at for $.99 is a great problem-solving game combined with practice on basic skills. My kids' favorite "flavor" is playing in race mode using the dice, but numbers, coins, number words and more can be selected to use. I think kids even older kids would enjoy this!
Maths: Sumstackers second thumbs up from teacher of 5-6 year olds. On our first day with Ipads 'give it a go day', this was a firm favourite. I thought it would be too hard but they spend ages with it. Good problem solving.

Speaking Listening: Puppet pals (cowboy set free). Lets you create a simple show and narrate it. Very impressed with the way quiet children picked this and spoke out.
Talking Tom Cat (free) voice recognition, speaks back to you in a funny voice. Again huge hit with quiet children. Big plus if you don't articulate Tom cat puts his hand to his ear because he can't hear you. The children completly accept this self-correct from Tom and carry on.
Thanks for the great site Sam.

One of the problems is locating relevant apps within the vast array on offer. We have started to sort apps into the different key learning areas. I hope some of your readers find this info helpful.

MathBoard and the 2 from Montessorium: Intro to Letters and Intro to Math. Lovely blend of old-school with new.
BrainPOP's got a free app for the iPad (and iPod Touch + iPhone) that was rated the #1 Education app through iTunes. We've been getting tons of positive feedback:

OK rethink on Talking Tom Cat, kids love it, teachers hate it. Apparently you can turn off the violence setting, you really need to do this, or Tom gets a pounding. Puppet Pals, we are taking it our iPads, it's a bit limited and doesn't really allow for creativity. It would great if they could create their own puppets.

Will check out brain pop.

Thank you to anyone who is listing apps, it's a time consuming job and I appreciate it.

A great alternative to puppet pals is tootastic it actually walks the kids through a story arc and helps them to define the mood of each scean

The iPad gives you a great opportunity to integrate important news into your daily teaching and discussions. Although they aren't specifically targeted at education, apps such as Pulse News, New York Times, 60 Minutes, PBS, BBC News and more can be invaluable resources in sparking discussion and research.

Khan Academy App - Math, Science topics. Math starts at 1 +1 and goes to College Level. Great resource for students. We also have Discovery Education accounts in our school system and their APP is terrific.
