iPads in Education

Exploring the use of iPads and mobile devices in education.

Hello. This question has been partially addressed but if somebody with experience doing this can give a more detailed description of the process I would appreciate it. If I buy 20 iPads for our school how do I buy apps and sync the apps to the iPads? I know that apple has a volume licensing program now so I assume that I would buy 20 licenses for a particular app. Would I then be able to download the app in iTunes and sync it to each individual iPad one by one? Would I be able to connect multiple iPads at the same time through a USB hub and sync them all at once to the same computer? Thanks in advance for your help.

I am currently using 10 ipads in my classroom and have been syncing them from one MacBook with no problems. I am using a 10 port USB hub. Once they have been initially synced, all I need to do is plug them all in, turn them on, and itunes usually does the rest. I have heard that this will work with 20, but I only have ten. I hope this helps.

Thanks for your replies. I participated in the Apple VPP webinar yesterday and they also confirmed that it should work with 20 iPads.
You can sync up to 16 iPads  simultaneously if you use a new solution from
Datamation Systems. Check out www.ipadcart.info.
Also check out the options at www.ddsecurity.com

What are the specs of the eqiupment you kolks are using to synch multiple ipads?

We have several solutions: 16 unit locker, and various configuration of carts.   Our carts can do 32 or 48 iPads at a time.

USB hubs do not work well.    We have products that use a circuit board that manage the syncing, in groups of 16, 32, or 49 ipads.

I've inspected the Ergotron iPad cart at a recent conference and while it was very compact in size, it was made out of plastic and not secure enough for classroom use. You can pop off those plastic doors and steal a classroom's worth of ipads with something as common as a butter knife!
Thanks for your comments!   We have passed them on to Ergotron.  It is, however, a compact and easily manueverable cart.   I have seen many carts and the ABS material make the strong light yet sturdy!

I agree with Roger.  Even though our school is pretty safe, we would not want to even tempt anyone into stealing the iPads or taking them out of the rooms for some unauthorized purpose.  We also wanted something sturdy that would last a long time.  The carts at http://www.ipadcarts.com/solutions/iPad_carts.htm have been great for that.

I purchased an iPad cart and it syncs all 30 of my iPad to one computer.  The cart can be found in the Apple Store.
