Exploring the use of iPads and mobile devices in education.
I'm afraid the IPad2 smart cover is not ideal for Grades K-2. Anyone have any suggestions? Anyone know of anything in the works?
Thanks!

There are thousands of iPad cases on the market, but very few...maybe 3 or so....shock and impact resistant cases. Every case provides some protection, but the shockproof units can really take a beating and still protect the iPad. The iPad needs to be protected from impacts and crushing.
The otterbox defender and commuter series work pretty well, but do not provide functional "glass" protection.
The screen on an iPad is not glass...It is an optical quality, hard, flexible, hard plastic...just like a contact lens.
The plastic will shatter after sudden impact and it will scratch.
The DropTech series by Hard Candy Cases, provides a functional TPU screen protector with the impact resistant case. The TPU equalizes a sharp impact and transmits the force over a larger surface. The TPU protector is replaceable. So far this is the best unit that I have found on the market.

Permalink Reply by Aaron Noll on August 10, 2012 at 8:42am Hey Folks, as I am searching for these I realized the Drop Tech Series is from Gumdrop (http://www.gumdropcases.com/drop-series-ipad-2-case.html), not Hard Candy. The dropTech Series is what I think I am leaning toward for our 2nd graders. It looks like the Big Grips is going to be very hard to charge and sync AND get their headphones plugged in.

DropTech is the model of the case. GumDrop and Hard Candy are the same company.
There is another case company that I can recommend that you review: www.gripcase-usa.com
This is a new company that only has one product. It is a shock proof case with preformed handles around the perimeter.
Please note: All of the above listed protective shock cases are fairly thick and may NOT fit into most iPad carts or cabinets....I have a line of cabinets that provide enough space for a 1.5" thick case.
I hope the info helps....John J Caprice

Permalink Reply by Roger L. Burtner on August 10, 2012 at 9:58am We used the CaseCrown folio case this past year and had a lot of shattered screens over the course of the school year. Our students took their iPad2s home at night and on weekends. The CaseCrown cases had a lot of features that we liked, but they did not adequately protect the corners which are the weak point for screen breakage. Although students were told not to remove the iPads from the cases, they apparently often did when using them for taking photos and making videos. They did so because it was easy to remove them from the case and the covering flap could get in the way of the camera when folded back.
Consequently, I have been looking far and wide for the perfect case, but have not found it. The perfect case would offer protection similar to the GumDrop, Griffin and Otterbox cases, have a built-in stand, incorporate a foldable cover with magnetic on/off, permit a protective transparent screen cover to be applied, and be priced at under $40. If the shell of the new Apple smart case were beefed up to better absorb abuse from drops, it would meet most of my requirements.
In the meantime we will probably be using the Cyclone DEFLEKTOR case this school year. It has most of the features of the Griffin Survivor (a plastic frame around the iPad that is covered with silicon rubber), comes with a screen protector and is less expensive. However, the built-in stand is not likely to hold up under heavy use. We also seriously considered the Belkin iPad protective case, but found that the latch soon failed and it had some other deficiencies.

I'll keep my eyes open and make a few calls... A key lock would be too bulky. There's always a better way.
