Innovating education with technology.
I'm the director of technology for a public cyber school in Pennsylvania. We currently have an enrollment of 10,500 k-12 students. We supply each student with a laptop, printer, headset, and other items. They take all of their coursework from their own homes using curriculum designed and created by us (Lincoln Interactive). We also have close to 5,000 students who take virtual classes, which are in real-time online with a teacher present.
I am going to implement a 1:1 iPad pilot with 300 students for the 2011-2012 school year, where the students will have the devices at home with them. We need to remain CIPA-compliant with these devices, so I'm going to install a filtering browser that gets very high ratings in the app store. I also now have a mobile device management server that will allow asset tracking, OTA updates of in-house apps, restrictions profiles, and the ability for me to see which apps are installed on every iPad.
It seems that every site I find about iPads in education, only speaks of brick and mortar classrooms. Does anyone here teach or work in a cyber environment? I'd love to get a discussion going around that type of environment.
