iPads in Education

Exploring the use of iPads and mobile devices in education.

Creating an iTunes account to manage multiple iPads in a library.

Our library is receiving in 20  iPads. The library has been set up with a Program Facilitator account for the App Store Volume Purchase Program. In fact, they've already purchased a number of apps, and are ready to install!

So, now they need to install and manage the iPads. They will use a single Mac to do so until they get a cart.

Now they need to set up an iTunes account to manage the iPads. This part seems to get glossed over in various guides.

What is your work flow for setting up these kinds of accounts? Do you tie them to generic email accounts? Can they be set up without a credit card? Can the Program Facilitator account be used?

Is this how you all have created iTunes accounts without inputting credit card information? And then tied the account to a "generic" email address, like ipadlab3@myschool.edu?

I was wondering how it was going with managing all of your ipads on one computer?  Are you logged into the mac with the same account when plugging in the ipads or do you log out and then log in with a different user.  Basically i guess this would answer whether or not each ipad needs its own itunes library or not.

Mark, each iPad does NOT need its own iTunes account.  My experience with Datamation Systems' 49 iPad USB hub (www.ipadcarts.com) has shown me that you can charge and sync 49 different iPads to the same iTunes account.  It would be really inconvenient to have to create 49 different iTunes accounts for 49 iPads!
It has been some time since I posted this and have discovered that while you can sync apps downloaded with one account on a computer to multiple ipads, if you dont want to be in license violation in countries that do not currently have any volume purchasing program in place, you do need to purchase one copy of the app for each ipad or device in a school environment.  The only method i have read in all the discussion boards that i visit is to gift the app from your main account to an account that represents each one of your devices.  If there is a better way to do this I would be interested to hear it.
