Exploring the use of iPads and mobile devices in education.
Thanks to Greg Clinton for this suggestion. The following blog post on the Wandering Academic site outlines a useful workflow for collecting, annotating and returning student work.
Set up an account on a cloud service such as DropBox. Have students submit their work into a common folder or a separate folder that you set up for each student. You can also a;ternatively use the JotForm app to create a special form for students to submit their file. Use the GoodReader app to receive, review and annotate the document. Once complete, the annotated work can then be sent back to the student via email.

Most modern computers should now support a file protocol called WebDAV (Web-based Distributed Authoring and Versioning, http://www.webdav.org/). It is also possible a higher learning sites, however it would be best to contact your IT staff about getting server space for you class that includes WebDAV.
I'll see about a blog post with a list of options. Microsoft and Mac OSX servers can host them. Also personal computers running at least Windows 7 and OSX 10.6 can be configure to run it (requires turning on additional features already in both OSs). Several models of NAS (network attached storage) also now include WebDAV as an option.
Keep in mind that GoodReader also supports FTP/SFTP in nothing else is available.
